When Bitcoin activated Taproot in November 2021, the sales pitch was modest. Schnorr signatures would make multisignature spends look like ordinary single-key payments, complicated spending conditions would hide inside a Merkle tree until the moment they were used, and the average transaction would get a little cheaper.
